Fatal Collision on Highway 401 in Elgin County Leads to Road Closure


In the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025, a tragic collision on Highway 401 in Elgin County resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, drawing the attention of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) as they launched an investigation into the incident.

The crash occurred around 2:35 a.m. near Iona Road in Dutton, where a serious two-vehicle collision took place. Emergency responders, including Elgin County OPP, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and Central Elgin Fire and Emergency Services, were dispatched to the scene to provide immediate assistance.

Despite the swift response, one individual was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced deceased. Four other individuals involved in the accident were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, highlighting the serious nature of the incident.

In the wake of the collision, eastbound Highway 401 has been closed from Currie Road to Union Road in Dutton. The closure is expected to remain in effect for an undetermined amount of time as investigators work diligently to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The OPP, with support from the West Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) Team, is actively investigating the collision and will release updates as more information becomes available.
