In a significant move against impaired driving, the Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a 40-year-old man from Waubaushene, Ontario, following a traffic stop at a RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) checkpoint in North Huron. The incident occurred late at night on November 21, 2025, when OPP officers were actively monitoring driver sobriety in the area.
The RIDE program is a crucial initiative in Ontario, aimed at reducing the number of impaired drivers on the roads. According to the OPP, these checkpoints are essential in promoting public safety and discouraging individuals from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
At approximately 11:00 PM, officers conducted a routine check on Amberley Road and engaged with the driver of a vehicle. During their interaction, it became evident that the driver had consumed alcohol prior to getting behind the wheel. As a result, he was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.
Following his arrest, the individual was taken to the Huron OPP detachment in Clinton, where he provided breath samples to a qualified OPP Intoxilyzer Breath Technician. The results of the tests indicated that the driver’s blood alcohol concentration exceeded the legal limit, leading to further charges.
The accused, identified as Eric Brincat from Waubaushene, now faces a serious charge: Operation while Impaired - Over 80. In addition to the legal repercussions, his vehicle was towed and impounded for a period of seven days, and his driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days.
This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against impaired driving in Ontario. The OPP continues to encourage all drivers to make responsible choices and utilize alternative transportation methods if they plan to drink. With the holiday season approaching, the importance of staying safe on the roads cannot be overstated.
The provincial government has made significant efforts to combat impaired driving, including stricter penalties and increased police presence during peak times, such as holidays and weekends. These measures aim to ensure that all Ontarians can travel safely on the roads.
As we approach the festive season, it’s crucial for individuals to be mindful of their driving habits. The OPP’s commitment to public safety through initiatives like the RIDE program plays a vital role in fostering a safer community for all.
Residents of Waubaushene and surrounding areas are reminded to support these initiatives by making safe choices when it comes to alcohol consumption and transportation. Remember, a designated driver or rideshare service can be the difference between a safe journey home and a life-altering decision.
