Guelph Driver Arrested for Impaired Driving During Festive RIDE Program in Fergus
In a recent operation aimed at curbing impaired driving, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested a Guelph driver at a Festive RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) Program checkpoint in Fergus on December 3, 2025. This incident underscores the OPP’s ongoing commitment to road safety, particularly during the holiday season when festivities often lead to increased alcohol consumption.
At approximately 2:00 p.m. on that day, officers from the Wellington County OPP Traffic Management Unit set up a checkpoint at the intersection of Orangeville Road and Scotland Street. As part of their routine checks, they suspected one driver, identified as 56-year-old Nicola Dickson from Guelph, to be operating a vehicle while impaired.
The subsequent investigation led to multiple charges against Dickson under the Criminal Code. He is charged with operating while impaired by alcohol and drugs, having care or control of a vehicle with cannabis readily available, and possession of unmarked cigarettes. The latter charge highlights the ongoing issues surrounding unregulated tobacco sales in the province.
Following his arrest, Dickson was released from police custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Guelph on January 6, 2025. As per provincial regulations, he also faces a 90-day Administrative Driver’s License Suspension (ADLS) and a seven-day vehicle impoundment.
The OPP’s Festive RIDE Program is an essential initiative aimed at reducing impaired driving incidents across Ontario. With the holiday season approaching, it is crucial for community members to remain vigilant and responsible, ensuring a safe environment for all road users. The Wellington County OPP encourages individuals to plan ahead when consuming alcohol or cannabis and to consider alternative transportation options to avoid similar situations.
As Canadians, we pride ourselves on our commitment to public safety and responsible behaviour on the roads. The OPP’s proactive measures during the festive season are a reminder of the collective responsibility we share to keep our communities safe and our roads clear of impaired drivers. Let us all work together to ensure that the spirit of the holidays is celebrated responsibly.
