17-Year-Old from Palmerston Charged After School Bus Incident in North Perth
In a troubling incident that underscores the importance of road safety, a 17-year-old male from Palmerston has been charged after failing to stop for a school bus in North Perth. The event occurred around 3:00 p.m. on December 4, 2025, when the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting traffic enforcement in the area.
According to the OPP, the young driver was observed disregarding the school bus stop sign while it was active, a serious infraction that endangers the lives of children getting on and off school buses. Following this reckless act, the driver turned onto a side road where he collided with a stop sign. Fortunately, neither he nor his four passengers sustained any injuries in the process, a small mercy considering the potential consequences of the incident.
However, the situation took a more serious turn when police discovered several containers of open alcohol inside the vehicle. This revelation adds another layer to the charges the teenager now faces. He has been charged with several offences under the Highway Traffic Act, including:
-
Fail to Stop for School Bus
-
Careless Driving
-
Fail to Surrender Licence
In addition to these charges, the driver has also been charged under the Liquor Licence Control Act for having care or control of a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor. The consequences of such actions can be severe, especially for a young driver still learning the responsibilities that come with operating a vehicle.
Upon being stopped, the accused was issued Provincial Offence Notices totalling $1,305 in fines. He will have 15 days to decide whether he will pay the fines or contest the charges in provincial court.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of adhering to traffic laws, particularly around school zones where children are at their most vulnerable. It is crucial for all drivers, especially those who are younger and less experienced, to be vigilant and responsible behind the wheel. The safety of our children should always come first, and this case highlights the potential consequences of neglecting that duty.
As communities across Canada continue to prioritize road safety, this event in North Perth reinforces the need for ongoing education and awareness around the rules of the road. With the school year in full swing, let us all do our part to ensure that our streets are safe for everyone, particularly our youth.
