Walkerton Man Arrested After Fleeing Collision Involving Stop Sign

In a troubling incident that underscores the importance of road safety, a 33-year-old man from Walkerton has been arrested following a collision in Brockton, Ontario. The event unfolded on the evening of November 27, 2025, after the South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received reports of a vehicle failing to remain at the scene of an accident.

At approximately 9:21 p.m., a vigilant citizen observed a pick-up truck striking a stop sign at the intersection of South Street and Yonge Street before leaving the scene. The concerned individual promptly reported the incident to the OPP, providing a detailed description of the suspect vehicle.

Responding swiftly to the call, officers located a vehicle matching the description soon after. Upon approaching the driver, they detected signs of alcohol consumption. The officer made a lawful demand for the driver to provide a breath sample, which the driver refused. This refusal led to the immediate arrest of the driver, identified as Daniel Pharent, a resident of Walkerton.

Pharent has since been charged with several offenses, including:

  • Failure or refusal to comply with demand, under the Criminal Code (CC) 320.15(1)

  • Fail to remain at the scene of an accident, under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) 200(1)

  • Failure to report an accident, under the HTA 199(1)

The consequences of these actions are significant. Pharent is scheduled to appear at the Walkerton Ontario Court of Justice on December 17, 2025, to respond to the charges. In addition to facing legal repercussions, his vehicle has been impounded for a period of seven days, and his driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days.

This incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of responsible driving and the legal obligations that come with operating a vehicle. The OPP encourages all citizens to report reckless driving and to prioritize safety on the roads, especially as we approach the winter season when conditions can become treacherous.

As Canadians, we take pride in our communities and the safety of our roads. It is essential for drivers to be aware of their responsibilities and the potential consequences of impaired or reckless behaviour behind the wheel. We must work together to ensure that our streets remain safe for everyone.
