Newmarket Woman Arrested for Possession of Stolen Vehicle in Georgian Bay Township

In an alarming reminder of the persistent issue of vehicle theft in Ontario, a 28-year-old woman from Newmarket has been arrested in Georgian Bay Township for being in possession of a stolen vehicle. The incident unfolded on December 1, 2025, when an officer from the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting routine patrols on Highway 400.

Equipped with an Automatic Licence Plate Reader (ALPR), the officer was alerted to a vehicle that had been reported stolen from the Toronto area. Upon stopping the vehicle, the officer identified the driver, who was not only in possession of the stolen vehicle but was also found to be prohibited from driving and bound by a probation order.

The OPP arrested Lisa Pettigrew and transported her to the detachment for processing. She faces a series of serious charges under the Criminal Code, specifically for possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, operation while prohibited (two counts), and failing to comply with a probation order (three counts). The stolen vehicle has since been towed and will be returned to its rightful owner.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges related to vehicle theft and criminal traffic offenses in Ontario. The OPP’s proactive measures, including the use of advanced technology like ALPR, play a crucial role in tackling these issues and ensuring the safety of our communities.

In a separate incident on the same day, OPP officers responded to a single-vehicle collision in Midland at approximately 7:00 p.m. A minivan had left the roadway and was stuck in a snowbank on Manly Avenue. Officers arrived to assess the situation, further emphasizing the need for safe driving practices during the winter months when road conditions can be treacherous.

As winter sets in across the province, motorists are reminded to exercise caution and stay informed about road conditions. The OPP encourages everyone to drive responsibly and be mindful of the increased risks associated with winter driving.

Lisa Pettigrew is set to appear for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice on December 2, 2025. As this situation unfolds, it highlights the importance of community vigilance and the role of law enforcement in maintaining public safety on our roads.
