Fatal Collision in Longlac Claims Life of 17-Year-Old, Highway Reopens After Investigation

In a heartbreaking incident, Longlac has been shaken by the tragic death of a 17-year-old pedestrian following a collision with a transport truck on Highway 11. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported the incident occurred on Friday, November 28, at approximately 9:30 p.m., in the vicinity of the Long Lake First Nation, just west of Longlac.

Emergency services, including the OPP’s Greenstone Detachment and specialized units from the North West Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement, quickly responded to the scene. Unfortunately, the young victim was pronounced deceased at the site of the accident.

The collision raised immediate concerns for road safety and community wellbeing. Highway 11, a crucial route connecting various northern Ontario communities, was closed for several hours as the OPP conducted their investigation. The highway was reopened shortly before 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 29, allowing traffic to resume.

As the investigation continues, the OPP has stated that there has been no evidence thus far to support any criminal charges against the driver. This news is a relief to some, as the focus shifts towards understanding the circumstances surrounding this tragic event rather than attributing blame prematurely.

The OPP is appealing to the public for assistance in their investigation. They are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who possesses any video footage of the incident to come forward. Tips can be submitted directly to the OPP or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety, especially in rural areas where highways can be busy with both commercial and personal traffic. The community of Longlac is grieving this loss, and it highlights the need for ongoing awareness and precautionary measures when it comes to pedestrian safety on our highways.

As the investigation unfolds, the OPP will continue to keep the community informed. The tragic loss of a young life is a somber reminder of the vulnerabilities that exist on the roads we share. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and the residents of Longlac during this difficult time.
