Penetanguishene Man Arrested with Imitation Firearm and Homemade Electrical Weapon
In a concerning incident that highlights ongoing issues related to weapon possession, a 46-year-old man from Penetanguishene is now facing serious charges after being arrested with an imitation firearm and a homemade electrical weapon. The arrest took place on the evening of November 22, 2025, following a reported disturbance at a residence on Gignac Drive in the small town located in Ontario’s Southern Georgian Bay region.
According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), officers responded to the call around 9:30 p.m. Upon their arrival, they encountered two individuals who were engaged in a physical altercation on the roadway outside the home. While one man fled the scene, officers were able to detain the other individual, later identified as Gerry Dean.
During the arrest, OPP officers suspected that Dean was carrying weapons and attempted to apprehend him. Despite his resistance, he was successfully handcuffed. A subsequent search revealed that Dean had concealed a Glock-style handgun, later confirmed to be a pellet gun, and a homemade electrical weapon within his clothing.
This situation raises important questions about public safety and the regulations surrounding weapon possession in Canada. Although the firearm was not real, its resemblance to a genuine handgun could easily lead to dangerous misunderstandings in public settings. Dean was already bound by an Undertaking, which prohibited him from possessing any weapons, making this incident particularly concerning.
The charges laid against Dean include possession of an imitation weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a prohibited device or ammunition for a dangerous purpose, and carrying a concealed prohibited device or ammunition. These charges reflect the seriousness with which the OPP treats weapon-related offenses, especially in light of recent discussions about gun violence in communities across Canada.
The OPP’s quick response to the disturbance underscores the importance of police presence in maintaining community safety. As concerns about crime and safety continue to be a priority for Canadians, incidents like this remind us of the critical role law enforcement plays in addressing potentially dangerous situations before they escalate.
In the wake of this arrest, it is crucial for residents to remain vigilant and report any disturbances or suspicious activities to the authorities. With ongoing discussions around gun control and public safety, the community of Penetanguishene and indeed all of Ontario will be watching closely as the legal proceedings unfold.
As Canadians, we value our safety and the well-being of our communities. This incident serves as a reminder that even in smaller towns, issues related to weapons and public safety are ever-present, and we must all do our part to contribute to a safer society.
