Lakeshore Man Arrested for Impaired Driving After Erratic Behaviour on County Road 22

In a concerning incident that highlights the ongoing issue of impaired driving on Ontario roads, a 52-year-old man from Lakeshore was arrested after police observed him driving erratically on November 17, 2025. The arrest, carried out by a member of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Lakeshore Detachment, serves as a critical reminder of the dangers associated with drinking and driving.

At approximately 8:30 PM, OPP officers were on patrol when they noticed a vehicle behaving suspiciously on County Road 22 at Wallace Line Road. The erratic driving raised immediate concerns, prompting the officer to initiate a traffic stop. Upon approaching the vehicle and speaking with the driver, it became evident that the individual had consumed alcohol prior to getting behind the wheel.

This type of behaviour is not only illegal but also poses a significant threat to public safety. Impaired driving continues to be a leading cause of accidents on Canadian roads, and the OPP are committed to tackling this ongoing problem. As part of their mandate, they encourage citizens to report any suspicious activities or potential impaired drivers to help keep communities safe.

Following the assessment, the driver, identified as Robert Benoit, was arrested and taken to a local detachment for further testing. He now faces serious charges under the Criminal Code, including:

  • Operation while Impaired - Alcohol

  • Operation while Impaired - Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus)

  • Dangerous Operation

These charges reflect the gravity of the situation, as impaired driving offences can carry severe penalties, including hefty fines, license suspensions, and even jail time. Benoit has since been released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Windsor on December 2, 2025.

The Essex County OPP strongly advises the public to remain vigilant and report any signs of impaired driving to law enforcement. With the holiday season approaching, the risk of impaired driving often increases as festivities and celebrations lead to more individuals consuming alcoholic beverages.

By working together, communities can play a pivotal role in reducing the number of impaired drivers on the road. Whether it’s arranging for a designated driver, using public transportation, or simply staying put after enjoying a drink, every effort counts in the fight against impaired driving.

As responsible Canadians, it is crucial to prioritize safety—not just for ourselves but for everyone on the road. With increased awareness and proactive measures, we can help ensure that our roads remain safe for all.
