Gravenhurst Driver Herbert Peleikis Charged with Impaired Operation Following Collision with Construction Equipment
In a troubling reminder of the risks posed by impaired driving, a 69-year-old man from Gravenhurst, Ontario, has been charged after a vehicle collided with construction equipment on Evans Avenue East. The incident, which occurred on November 13, prompted immediate action from the Bracebridge Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
According to police reports, officers were alerted around 6:50 PM by a concerned citizen who witnessed the crash and noted that the driver fled the scene. Quick action by responding officers led them to locate the suspect’s vehicle nearby. Upon investigation, they arrested Herbert Peleikis and charged him with several serious offenses: Impaired Operation, Impaired-Over 80, Operation while Prohibited, and Failure to Stop after an Accident.
Peleikis is set to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge on December 2, 2025, where he will address these charges.
This incident underscores a pressing issue for communities across Muskoka, where impaired driving remains a significant concern. The OPP urges anyone who suspects a driver may be impaired to call 9-1-1 immediately.
Impaired driving not only endangers the life of the driver but also puts other road users at risk, particularly in areas where construction is underway. As Ontario continues to see construction projects aimed at improving infrastructure, the safety of workers and motorists alike must remain a top priority.
As Canadians, we have a collective responsibility to ensure our roads are safe for everyone. The OPP’s ongoing efforts to combat impaired driving are crucial in keeping our communities secure. If you or someone you know has been affected by impaired driving, resources and support are available to help navigate the aftermath of such incidents.
Stay safe on the roads, especially as we approach the holiday season, a time when celebrations can sometimes lead to unfortunate choices behind the wheel. Remember, if you plan on drinking, make arrangements for a safe ride home.
