Winter Driving Hazards: Multiple Collisions on Highway 11 Near Smooth Rock Falls
As winter weather descends upon Northern Ontario, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are urging motorists to exercise caution on the roads, particularly on Highway 11 near Smooth Rock Falls. The OPP’s James Bay detachment has reported a series of collisions that highlight the dangers of winter driving conditions.
On November 7, at approximately 10:30 a.m., OPP officers responded to a tractor-trailer that had ended up in the ditch, blocking the eastbound lane of Highway 11. The driver, a 30-year-old man from Hamilton, was charged with Careless Driving—an unfortunate reminder of how quickly conditions can change when winter sets in.
The very next day, on November 8, at around 5:00 a.m., while a vehicle was being extracted from the ditch, a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) approached the scene. Unable to stop in time, it collided with a tow truck, narrowly missing an OPP cruiser that had its emergency lights activated. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported, although both vehicles sustained minor damage. The 24-year-old driver from St. Andrews, Manitoba, was also charged with Careless Driving.
Later that same morning, at approximately 8:50 a.m., the OPP responded to yet another incident—a CMV rollover on Highway 11, west of Highway 655. The driver, a 28-year-old from Winnipeg, Manitoba, faced similar charges of Careless Driving.
These incidents serve as a stark warning for all drivers navigating the highways during the winter months. With snow and ice making roads slippery, it is crucial to adjust driving habits accordingly. The OPP emphasizes the importance of maintaining safe distances, reducing speeds, and being extra vigilant, especially in adverse weather conditions.
As Canadians, we take pride in our ability to navigate the harsh winters, but safety should always be the top priority. The OPP advises that preparation is key—ensure your vehicle is equipped for winter driving, and if conditions are too dangerous, it is better to stay off the roads altogether.
With the winter season upon us, let us all commit to safer driving practices. Remember, every driver on the road has a responsibility to themselves and to others. Stay safe out there!
