Project Red Ribbon Campaign Launches in Lucknow to Promote Sober Driving

On November 12, 2025, the small town of Lucknow in Ontario became the focal point for an important safety initiative as the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and local volunteers from the Huron-Bruce chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) kicked off their annual Project Red Ribbon Campaign. This initiative aims to promote sober driving during the festive holiday season, a time often associated with increased celebrations and, unfortunately, impaired driving incidents.

The event was marked by a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) program, where OPP officers set up a checkpoint to screen drivers for impairment. Approximately 100 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, and officers were pleased to report that all drivers were in compliance and sober. This positive outcome reflects the community’s commitment to road safety and responsible driving, especially as the holiday season approaches.

Sergeant Russ Nesbitt from the Huron County OPP emphasized the importance of sober driving during this time of year. “The holidays should be a time for joy and celebration, not for tragedy caused by impaired driving,” he stated. His message resonates not only with local residents but also with Canadians across the country, as the holiday season often sees an uptick in social gatherings that can lead to unsafe driving behaviours.

The Project Red Ribbon Campaign serves as a reminder to all Canadians about the significance of making safe choices on the road. The red ribbon symbolizes a commitment to driving sober and serves as a pledge to keep oneself and others safe. Residents are encouraged to display red ribbons on their vehicles, a simple yet powerful gesture that promotes awareness and accountability.

The collaboration between the OPP and MADD is part of a larger effort across Ontario to combat impaired driving, a serious issue that claims too many lives each year. The statistics are sobering; according to MADD Canada, alcohol is a factor in about 30% of fatal collisions in Ontario. Initiatives like Project Red Ribbon are vital in addressing this issue and fostering a culture of responsible drinking and driving.

As the holidays approach, events like the one in Lucknow highlight the proactive steps being taken by local law enforcement and community organizations to ensure safety on the roads. With the support of community members and organizations, the hope is to create a safer driving environment for everyone.

For those planning to celebrate this season, the message is clear: if you plan on drinking, have a designated driver, use a ride-sharing service, or take public transport. By making these responsible choices, you can help keep our roads safe and ensure that everyone can enjoy the festivities without fear.

As Canadians, let’s come together to support initiatives like Project Red Ribbon and make our commitment to sober driving a priority. Let’s keep our roads safe for everyone this holiday season and beyond.
