Loyalist Township Driver Charged with Impaired Operation After Traffic Complaints

In a concerning incident highlighting the persistent issue of impaired driving, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a local driver in Loyalist Township after receiving multiple complaints about erratic driving behaviour. The incident occurred on November 12, 2025, when officers were called to County Road 41 near Kaladar just after 10:30 a.m. Following the initial report, a second complaint was made regarding the driver’s behaviour on County Road 4 in Loyalist Township.

Responding swiftly to the calls, OPP officers located the vehicle and driver at an address in Loyalist Township. The driver, identified as 43-year-old Joshua Howes, was subsequently arrested and taken to the detachment for further testing, which revealed he was operating the vehicle while impaired by alcohol.

Howes has been charged with two offenses: operating a vehicle while impaired and operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit of 0.08. This is a serious charge that reflects the potential dangers posed by impaired drivers on the road, endangering not just themselves, but also other motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Following the arrest, Howes was released from custody, but he will have to face the consequences of his actions in court. He is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Greater Napanee at a later date. In addition to the legal ramifications, Howes’ driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days, and his vehicle has been impounded for seven days, both standard responses to impaired driving incidents in Ontario.

This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against impaired driving in Canada. With the holiday season approaching, the OPP and other law enforcement agencies are likely to ramp up efforts to ensure road safety. Impaired driving remains a leading cause of accidents in the country, and this case underscores the importance of responsible behaviour behind the wheel.

Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious driving behaviour to the authorities, as community involvement is crucial in keeping our roads safe. The OPP urges everyone to plan ahead and designate a sober driver if they intend to consume alcohol, and to utilize taxi services or rideshare options when necessary.

As we move forward, it is essential that we all play our part in reducing impaired driving incidents in Ontario, and ensuring the safety of our roads for everyone.
