The incident led to the arrest of a 25-year-old man from Fergus, who now faces serious charges related to impaired driving.

Upon arrival at the scene around 12:15 AM, the OPP found a single vehicle off the highway. Following a thorough investigation, officers suspected that the driver was operating the vehicle while impaired. As a result, the individual was charged under the Criminal Code for “Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).”

This charge underscores the ongoing vigilance required in combating impaired driving, an issue that affects communities across Ontario. With the festive season approaching, the OPP continues to remind drivers of the importance of designated drivers and alternative transportation options.

In addition to the criminal charges, the accused will also face a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS) and a 45-day vehicle impoundment, as mandated by provincial regulations. The OPP did not release the name of the accused, citing concerns for their well-being—a reminder that every incident has personal impacts beyond the legal ramifications.

The OPP encourages anyone who suspects a driver is impaired to report it immediately, calling 911 to ensure the safety of all road users. This proactive approach is essential in reducing the number of impaired driving incidents on Ontario’s roads.
