Moosonee Woman Charged with Drug Impairment and Vehicle Theft Following Collision
In a concerning incident that underscores the persistent issue of impaired driving in Ontario’s northern communities, a 40-year-old woman from Moosonee has been charged following a collision involving a stolen pickup truck. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to the report of the stolen vehicle on Sunday, November 9, 2025, and the investigation quickly took a turn when officers discovered the truck in a ditch.
At approximately 11:00 a.m., the OPP received a call about a pickup truck that had gone into the ditch on Wavey Crescent. Officers were able to locate a vehicle matching the description soon after, driving on Quarry Road. Upon conducting a traffic stop, they engaged with the driver, Mary Nakogee, who exhibited signs of impairment. Subsequent investigation revealed that she had consumed an intoxicating substance, leading to her arrest.
The charges against Nakogee are serious and reflect a growing concern about road safety in Ontario, particularly in remote areas like Moosonee. She faces charges of:
-
Operation while impaired - drugs
-
Theft of a motor vehicle
-
Fail to comply with probation order - three counts
Following her arrest, Nakogee was taken to the Moosonee OPP detachment for further testing. After the investigation, she was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Moosonee on January 6, 2026. Additionally, she received a 90-day administrative driver’s licence suspension, a measure that aims to deter individuals from driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by impaired driving, particularly in Canada’s northern regions where resources may be limited. The OPP continues to emphasize the importance of road safety and the devastating consequences that can arise from impaired driving. As communities work together to combat these issues, awareness and prevention remain key in keeping our roads safe.
The situation highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address impaired driving, a significant issue that not only endangers the lives of those driving under the influence but also the safety of other road users. As the legal proceedings unfold, the community of Moosonee will undoubtedly be watching closely, hoping for justice and a safer environment for all.
