27-Year-Old Red Lake Man Arrested for Drug-Impaired Driving in Thunder Bay

On the evening of November 7, 2025, a concerned citizen’s quick thinking led to the arrest of a drug-impaired driver in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The incident unfolded around 10:57 PM when the witness stopped to assist a distressed motorist along Highway 11-17, just east of the Terry Fox Memorial in the Municipality of Shuniah.

Responding promptly to the call, officers from the Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrived on the scene alongside Emergency Medical Services (EMS). While providing assistance, the officers quickly determined that the driver, later identified as Noah Haney, 27, from Red Lake, was under the influence of a controlled substance.

A thorough investigation revealed a concerning array of items in the vehicle: cannabis, open alcohol, and what appeared to be cocaine. The presence of these substances prompted the officers to arrest Haney and transport him back to the detachment for further testing.

As a result of this investigation, Haney has been charged with several serious offenses under the Criminal Code and provincial laws. These include:

Criminal Code Charges:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance - Cocaine

Provincial Offences:

  • Novice driver - presence of drug

  • Drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available

  • Having care or control of a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor

  • Fail to have insurance card

After his arrest, Haney was released from custody and is set to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay on January 7, 2025.

The OPP emphasizes the importance of road safety and encourages all Ontarians to remain vigilant against impaired driving. Citizens are urged to report any instances of impaired, aggressive, or careless driving by calling 911 in emergency situations.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issues surrounding impaired driving in Ontario. The introduction of stricter laws surrounding cannabis and alcohol consumption has aimed to reduce the number of impaired drivers on the road, but incidents like this show that there is still much work to be done.

As Canadians, we take pride in our beautiful roadways and the safety of our communities. It is vital that we all play a role in ensuring these roads remain safe for everyone. Whether you are a driver, a passenger, or a concerned citizen, your vigilance can help prevent potential tragedies on our highways.
