Scarborough Man Arrested for Impaired Driving at RIDE Checkpoint in Sundridge

On November 1, 2025, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) checkpoint on Main Street in Sundridge, a small community located in the Almaguin Highlands region of Ontario. The initiative, which aims to combat impaired driving, resulted in the arrest of a 38-year-old man from Scarborough, who was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.

At approximately 8:15 p.m., officers stopped the suspect’s vehicle and immediately observed signs of alcohol consumption. The ensuing investigation revealed that the driver, identified as Raymond Driffield, was not only impaired but also criminally prohibited from operating a motor vehicle due to prior infractions.

Driffield now faces serious charges, including:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol

  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration over 0.08

  • Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code

Following his arrest, Driffield was taken to the Burk’s Falls OPP detachment for further testing. The consequences of his actions are significant; he has been released from custody but is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sundridge on January 8, 2026. Additionally, he received a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS), and his vehicle was impounded for a period of seven days.

Impaired driving remains a pressing issue in Ontario, despite ongoing campaigns and enforcement efforts. The RIDE program is a crucial part of the OPP’s strategy to reduce alcohol-related accidents and fatalities on the roads. Statistics show that impaired driving is a leading cause of collisions in Canada. The OPP encourages all Ontarians to report suspected impaired drivers to law enforcement and to always plan for a safe ride home after consuming alcohol.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible driving and the potential consequences of impaired operation of a vehicle. With the holiday season approaching, it is vital for communities across Canada to remain vigilant against impaired driving, ensuring the safety of all road users.
