North Bay Man Charged with Impaired Driving After Speeding Incident

In a concerning reminder of the dangers of impaired driving, a North Bay resident found himself in hot water this past Sunday after being pulled over for speeding. Patrick Houghton, 33, was clocked driving at 120 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on Highway 11/17 around 3:15 AM, leading to significant legal repercussions.

North Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers conducted a traffic stop on Maplewood Avenue, where they detected signs that Houghton had been consuming alcohol. The situation escalated as the driver was arrested and taken to the North Bay OPP detachment for further testing, confirming the officers’ suspicions.

As a result of the investigation, Houghton has been charged with several offences, including operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol, exceeding the legal blood alcohol concentration limit, and speeding—40 km/h over the posted limit.

Following the incident, Houghton was released from custody but faces a court appearance scheduled for December 2, 2025, at the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay. In addition to his legal troubles, he received a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS) and had his vehicle impounded for seven days.

The OPP’s commitment to road safety is highlighted by this incident, as they continue their efforts to remove impaired drivers from Ontario’s roads. With the holiday season approaching, the focus on preventing impaired driving becomes even more critical. Public awareness campaigns and strict enforcement are vital components in ensuring the safety of all road users.

It is essential for drivers in our communities to remember the serious consequences of driving under the influence. The OPP urges all citizens to be responsible and make safe choices, particularly during times of increased social gatherings and celebrations.

As Canadians, we pride ourselves on our commitment to safety and responsible behaviour. Incidents like this serve as a stark reminder of the importance of staying sober behind the wheel. Let’s work together to keep our roads safe for everyone.
