North Bay Man Charged with Impaired Driving After Collision in Bonfield

In a serious incident highlighting the dangers of impaired driving, a 56-year-old man from North Bay has been charged following a collision in Bonfield, Ontario. The incident unfolded on the evening of October 30, 2025, when an off-duty officer from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) observed a vehicle swerving dangerously on Highway 17.

At approximately 7:15 p.m., the off-duty officer reported seeing the vehicle nearly enter the ditch while traveling eastbound toward Mattawa. This alarming sight prompted the officer to take action, notifying the OPP of the suspected impaired driver. Just 15 minutes later, the same vehicle rear-ended another car in Bonfield Township, further escalating the situation.

Upon arrival at the scene, OPP officers quickly assessed the situation and determined that the driver had consumed an intoxicating substance. The driver, identified as Edgar Desjardins, was arrested and taken to the North Bay OPP detachment for further testing, where he faced the consequences of his actions.

Desjardins has been charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs, as well as following too closely—a charge that reflects the circumstances of the rear-end collision. As part of the legal process, he was released from custody but is expected to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on December 16, 2025, in North Bay.

In addition to the charges, Desjardins received a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS), and his vehicle was impounded. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the serious risks associated with impaired driving, a pressing issue on Canadian roads.

As Canadians, we must remain vigilant and responsible behind the wheel, particularly as we approach the holiday season—a time known for increased gatherings and celebrations. The OPP continues to urge drivers to prioritize safety and make responsible choices to prevent tragic outcomes on our roads.

Impaired driving remains a significant concern across Ontario and Canada at large. According to the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction, impaired driving is a leading cause of motor vehicle accidents, resulting in countless injuries and fatalities each year. The OPP is committed to reducing these incidents through rigorous enforcement and public education campaigns.

As the community in North Bay and Bonfield processes this recent event, it is crucial to reflect on the importance of safe driving practices. Whether it’s arranging for a designated driver or utilizing rideshare services, there are always alternatives to getting behind the wheel while impaired. Let us work together to keep our roads safe for everyone.
