East Algoma OPP Investigates String of Break-Ins at Peshu Lake Seasonal Trailers
The East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating a series of break-and-enters that have left seasonal property owners in the picturesque Peshu Lake area shaken. Situated approximately 117 kilometres north of Thessalon, the tranquil community of Root Township has recently become the target of criminal activity, with multiple travel trailers broken into between September 4 and October 13, 2025.
On Wednesday, September 17, the OPP received numerous reports detailing the unsettling occurrences. Thieves were able to gain entry into five seasonal trailers, demonstrating a level of caution that is concerning. Instead of leaving a chaotic scene, the culprits made an effort to ensure the trailers appeared undisturbed, likely to avoid drawing immediate attention to their crimes.
The point of entry for these break-ins was primarily through screened windows and pried open doors, showcasing a methodical approach. The stolen items from these trailers are particularly alarming, including firearms and other valuable property. Among the items reported missing are a 12-gauge 270 Remington pump-action shotgun, a 12-gauge single-shot Coey shotgun, a .22 Savage semi-automatic rifle, and even a pellet rifle. Additionally, a 12-foot aluminum boat and multiple propane tanks were taken, raising concerns about safety and security in the area.
The impact of these crimes extends beyond the immediate financial loss suffered by the property owners; it also raises questions about safety in the community. The Peshu Lake area is known for its natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities, attracting many seasonal residents who cherish their time in this serene environment. However, the recent surge in break-ins has cast a shadow over the tranquility that usually characterizes this region.
Local residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the OPP. The authorities are actively pursuing leads and are committed to restoring peace of mind to the community. As more people invest in seasonal properties in Ontario’s beautiful rural landscapes, it is important to remain aware of potential risks and take proactive measures to secure these spaces.
This incident serves as a reminder for all Canadians, particularly those in rural and seasonal areas, to consider enhancing their security measures, such as installing surveillance systems or joining community watch programs. By working together and staying alert, communities can help deter criminal activity and protect their homes and properties.
As the investigation continues, the East Algoma OPP will keep the community informed and encourage residents to engage with law enforcement to ensure a safer environment for everyone. The beauty of Ontario’s countryside deserves to be enjoyed without the fear of crime overshadowing the experience.
