Suspicious Substance Found in Halloween Treat in Mattawa Sparks OPP Warning

As families across Canada enjoyed Halloween festivities, a concerning incident in Mattawa, Ontario, has prompted a warning from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). Parents are being urged to meticulously inspect their children’s Halloween treats following the discovery of a suspicious substance in a chip bag.

On November 1, 2025, a family residing in the Chenier Road area of Papineau-Cameron reported that they found a bag of chips that appeared to have been tampered with. The bag was cut open and resealed, raising immediate alarm. When officers from the North Bay Detachment of the OPP conducted a preliminary examination, they detected the presence of a substance suspected to be morphine.

At this stage, no additional reports of similar incidents have emerged, and the OPP is actively investigating the origin of the item. They are also assessing whether there are any further public safety concerns connected to this matter.

In light of this incident, OPP Constable Chris Nygard emphasizes the importance of vigilance during Halloween, a time when children eagerly collect treats from their neighbourhoods. “It’s essential for parents to thoroughly check all Halloween candy and treats before allowing their children to consume them,” he stated. This precautionary measure is especially pertinent when it comes to unopened items or those that show signs of tampering.

While this incident may be an isolated case, it serves as a reminder for all Canadians, particularly in smaller communities, to remain aware and cautious. Halloween, while a time for fun and sweets, can also present unexpected risks.

As the investigation continues, local residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity or additional findings to the OPP. The safety of the community is a shared responsibility, and awareness can go a long way in ensuring that everyone enjoys a safe and happy Halloween.

As the OPP wraps up their investigation, they will continue to keep the community informed. In the meantime, let this serve as a reminder to all parents: inspecting treats is a simple but effective way to ensure a safe Halloween experience for your little ghouls and goblins.
