Picton's James Maw Charged with Impaired Driving After OPP RIDE Program

In a concerning trend for road safety in Prince Edward County, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged another impaired driver, bringing the total to six for the month of October alone. The most recent charge involves 33-year-old James Maw, a resident of Picton, who was apprehended during a routine Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) program.

At approximately 3:00 AM on October 30, officers were conducting their RIDE checks when Maw approached the checkpoint. Officers utilized an approved roadside alcohol screening device, which led to Maw’s arrest for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. He was subsequently transported to the detachment for further testing.

Maw has been charged with two serious offences: operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol and operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 80 mg. These charges reflect the OPP’s ongoing commitment to combat impaired driving, a significant issue that poses risks to all road users in Ontario.

In addition to his criminal charges, Maw’s driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days, and his vehicle has been impounded for a period of seven days. He is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Picton on November 26, 2025.

This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers associated with impaired driving, especially as the holiday season approaches. The OPP encourages all Canadians to prioritize safety on the roads by making responsible decisions about drinking and driving.

In recent years, impaired driving has been a salient topic in discussions around public safety in Canada. The OPP, along with various community partners, has ramped up efforts to educate the public on the risks of impaired driving and the severe consequences that can follow. The ongoing RIDE program is one such initiative aimed at deterring drivers from operating their vehicles under the influence.

As we move into a season often associated with festivities and gatherings, it’s crucial for everyone to be vigilant and ensure they have a safe plan for getting home. Whether it’s arranging for a designated driver, using public transportation, or calling a cab, the choices made can mean the difference between life and death.

The Prince Edward County community is urged to remain alert and report any suspected impaired drivers to the police. Together, we can work towards making our roads safer for everyone.
