Leamington Driver Charged with Impaired Operation Following Highway 401 Collision

In the early hours of October 25, 2025, a two-vehicle collision on Highway 401 near Elgin Road in Thames Centre resulted in a significant legal response and charges of impaired driving against a young man from Leamington. At approximately 3:39 a.m., members of the Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), alongside the Middlesex-London Paramedic Service and Thames Centre Fire, responded to reports of the accident.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers determined that one of the drivers, identified as 21-year-old Marco Luna Paredes from Leamington, was suspected of operating his vehicle while impaired. The OPP promptly placed him under arrest and transported him to their Middlesex detachment for processing.

Paredes now faces serious charges under the Criminal Code and the Highway Traffic Act, including:

  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle

  • Young driver with a blood alcohol concentration above zero

While the incident highlights ongoing concerns about impaired driving, it is worth noting that fortunately, there were no injuries reported as a result of this collision.

The OPP is keen to remind all drivers, especially younger ones, about the importance of responsible driving. Ontario has strict laws in place regarding impaired operation, and it is crucial for all drivers to adhere to these regulations, not only for their safety but also for the safety of others on the road.

Paredes has since been released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in London on November 13, 2025, to address the charges against him.

Impaired driving remains a critical issue across Canada, and the OPP’s proactive stance in addressing it through enforcement and public education is essential. The use of designated drivers, ride-sharing services, or simply choosing not to drink and drive can save lives and prevent situations like the one that transpired on Highway 401.

As Canadians, it is imperative that we uphold the values of safety and responsibility on our roads. The OPP encourages anyone who suspects an impaired driver or witnesses any suspicious activity to contact local law enforcement immediately. Together, we can work towards making our highways safer for everyone.
