Wellington Man Charged with Impaired Driving in Picton After Disturbing Incident

In a concerning reminder of the ongoing battle against impaired driving, a 31-year-old man from Wellington has been charged following an incident in Picton on the evening of October 25, 2025. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Prince Edward County Detachment received a report around 10:45 p.m. regarding a possible impaired driver leaving a local establishment on Picton Main Street.

The OPP promptly responded to the call and located the vehicle in question. Upon stopping the driver, officers determined that the individual displayed signs of impairment and subsequently arrested him. The accused was taken to the detachment for further testing, where the full extent of his impairment was assessed.

Stephen Staines, the individual charged, now faces several serious charges, including:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol

  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

  • Driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor

Staines was released from custody and is set to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in the near future.

Impaired driving remains a critical issue across Canada, particularly in regions such as Prince Edward County, where tourism and nightlife can contribute to increased instances of driving under the influence. The OPP has been proactive in their efforts to combat this dangerous behaviour, frequently conducting checkpoints and patrols, especially during weekends and holidays when the likelihood of impaired driving increases.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible drinking and driving practices. With the holidays approaching, it’s crucial for Canadians to plan ahead and ensure they have safe transportation options if they choose to partake in alcoholic beverages.

Ontario’s laws regarding impaired driving are strict, and penalties can include heavy fines, license suspensions, and even jail time. The OPP encourages anyone who suspects someone is driving while impaired to report it immediately.

As Canadians, it is our collective responsibility to keep our roads safe for everyone. Let’s remember to make smart choices and consider the safety of ourselves and others while enjoying our vibrant communities across the country.
