Orillia Man Charged with Impaired Driving After OPP Traffic Stop in Kawartha Lakes

In a concerning yet not uncommon incident, a 34-year-old man from Orillia has been charged with impaired driving following a traffic stop conducted by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in the City of Kawartha Lakes. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against impaired driving on Ontario’s roads.

On October 26, 2025, at approximately 8:46 AM, an OPP officer was on patrol when they utilized an Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) to identify a vehicle that had committed a Highway Traffic Act offence. The OPP’s proactive measures through technology played a crucial role in this situation, allowing officers to swiftly respond to potential dangers on the road.

Upon conducting the traffic stop, the officer quickly recognized that the situation warranted further investigation into impaired driving. The driver, identified as Dustin Beresford, was arrested after failing a sobriety test. He was subsequently charged with serious offences, including:

  • Operation while Impaired - Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus)

  • Operate a Motor Vehicle without Insurance

  • Drive Motor Vehicle No Currently Validated Permit

The charges against Beresford highlight the importance of adhering to road safety regulations. Not only is impaired driving a significant concern for law enforcement, but it also poses a severe risk to other motorists and pedestrians alike. Every year, impaired driving leads to numerous accidents and fatalities, making it imperative for authorities to remain vigilant.

In addition to the criminal charges, Beresford’s driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days, and his vehicle has been impounded. He is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Lindsay for further proceedings, where he will face the consequences of his actions.

This incident also underscores the effectiveness of the OPP’s use of technology in keeping Ontario’s roads safe. The ALPR system is a valuable tool for law enforcement agencies, helping to identify vehicles associated with criminal activity and ensuring that drivers comply with traffic laws.

As Canadians, we must collectively work towards reducing impaired driving incidents. Awareness campaigns, community programs, and strict enforcement of traffic laws are all vital components in making our roads safer. This case serves as a reminder that driving is a privilege that comes with significant responsibilities.
