Cobalt Drug Trafficker Arrested in Temiskaming Shores with Loaded Handgun and Fentanyl
In a significant police operation, a traffic stop in Temiskaming Shores has led to the arrest of a Toronto man on multiple serious charges, including drug trafficking and firearm possession. The incident unfolded on October 23, 2025, when officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Temiskaming Detachment, in collaboration with the Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), initiated an investigation into suspected drug trafficking activities in the small town of Cobalt.
At around 3:00 p.m., the police stopped a vehicle at a business located on Highway 65 East. The operation was a part of the OPP’s ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crimes in the region, which have been a growing concern for communities across Ontario.
During the traffic stop, officers arrested the driver, identified as 24-year-old Giovanni Liverpool of Toronto. A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded alarming results: police discovered a loaded 9mm handgun, approximately $1,300 in Canadian currency, and quantities of suspected fentanyl and cocaine. The presence of these substances raises serious questions about the risks posed to public safety in the area.
Liverpool now faces a range of serious charges, including:
-
Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - Fentanyl
-
Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - Cocaine
-
Unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm
-
Possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm
-
Possession of proceeds of crime under $5000
-
Occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm
-
Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
As a result of these charges, the accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing. This case highlights the ongoing issues related to drug trafficking and gun violence that continue to challenge many communities in Ontario.
The OPP has made it clear that they remain vigilant in their efforts to address these issues, recognizing that drug-related crimes often have deep implications for public safety. The seizure of firearms in conjunction with drug trafficking is particularly concerning, as it underscores the potential for violence associated with these illegal activities.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement. Residents in regions like Temiskaming Shores are encouraged to report any suspicious activities that may indicate drug trafficking or other criminal behaviour.
As Ontario continues to grapple with the challenges posed by drug addiction and the associated crime, the role of law enforcement remains crucial in maintaining public safety and order. The arrest of individuals involved in trafficking operations not only disrupts the flow of illegal substances but also sends a strong message that such activities will not be tolerated.
As more details emerge from this case, it will be essential for the community to stay informed and engaged in discussions about drug prevention and safety measures. Together, communities can work towards a safer environment free from the threats posed by drug trafficking and related violence.
