Sudbury Man Charged with Multiple Assaults During Massey Event

In a troubling turn of events, a Greater Sudbury man has been charged with multiple assaults stemming from a series of incidents that occurred during a seasonal event in the Town of Massey, Ontario. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to reports of disturbances involving youth on the evening of October 18, 2025, prompting an immediate investigation.

The OPP’s Manitoulin Detachment was alerted around 8:00 PM, where they learned that the same individual had been implicated in several assaults at different locations throughout Massey. This kind of behaviour, particularly at community gatherings, raises serious concerns about safety and the well-being of young attendees.

Lance Bennett, aged 39, now faces significant charges that include three counts of assault, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, causing a disturbance, and resisting a peace officer. Such allegations are particularly alarming as they highlight issues of safety at public events, which are meant to be enjoyable and inclusive for everyone.

The incidents have understandably shaken the local community, which prides itself on being a safe and welcoming environment for families and youth. Events like the one in Massey are essential for fostering community spirit and engagement, and any disruption can have lasting effects on public perception and attendee behaviour.

Bennett has been held in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on November 6, 2025. It remains to be seen how these legal proceedings will unfold, but the charges indicate the seriousness of the situation.

Community leaders and residents alike are now reflecting on the need for heightened security and awareness during public events. Ensuring the safety of all participants, especially vulnerable youth, must be a top priority in future gatherings. As Canadians, we must advocate for safer environments where community spirit can thrive without the shadow of violence or intimidation.

The OPP’s swift response to these incidents underscores the importance of law enforcement in maintaining public safety. However, it also calls for a collective effort from community members, event organizers, and local authorities to ensure that all attendees can enjoy seasonal events without fear.

As the legal process unfolds, the town of Massey will undoubtedly be watching closely, hoping for a resolution that reinforces community values and safety for all.
