Sault Ste. Marie Man Arrested for Impaired Driving and Fabricated Assault on Manitoulin Island

In an alarming incident that underscores the ongoing issue of impaired driving on Ontario’s roads, a 31-year-old man from Sault Ste. Marie has been arrested following a series of events that began in the early hours of October 9, 2025. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a call about a vehicle found in a ditch along Highway 17 in the Sables-Spanish Rivers Township, a well-travelled route that connects various Northern Ontario communities.

At approximately 3:15 a.m., officers arrived on the scene to find the driver, identified as Norman Bull, who claimed he had been assaulted during a road rage incident. However, this narrative quickly unraveled. Officers conducted a breath test using an Approved Screening Device (ASD), which indicated that Bull was driving under the influence of alcohol. The breath test returned a “FAIL,” leading to his immediate arrest for impaired operation.

As the investigation continued, it became clear that Bull’s claims of an assault were fabricated. The police determined that no road rage incident had occurred, and Bull was subsequently charged with public mischief for providing false information to law enforcement.

Bull now faces several serious charges, including:

  • Operation while impaired

  • Operation while impaired (over 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood)

  • Public mischief

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety, particularly in rural areas like Manitoulin Island, where the consequences of impaired driving can be dire. The OPP have emphasized the need for vigilance and responsible behaviour behind the wheel, especially as we approach the holiday season when more drivers are likely to be on the road.

Bull is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on November 17, 2025. As his case unfolds, it highlights not only the perils of impaired driving but also the importance of honesty in interactions with police. Law enforcement officials urge all drivers to make responsible choices and to report any suspected impaired drivers to keep our roads safe for everyone.

With the beauty of Manitoulin Island and its surrounding areas, it is crucial for residents and visitors alike to prioritize safety. Everyone has a role to play in ensuring that our highways remain safe, so let’s keep our roads clear of impaired drivers and support one another in making sound decisions.
