OPP Reminds Drivers: Stop for School Buses in Manitoulin to Keep Kids Safe
In a heartfelt reminder for road safety, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Manitoulin are urging drivers to prioritize the safety of children as they commute to and from school. This call to action comes in light of a troubling incident that occurred on October 7, 2025, when a white Chrysler sedan was reported to have passed a fully stopped school bus on Highway 6 in Tehkummah Township, despite its red lights flashing and stop arm extended.
The OPP emphasizes that when the red lights of a school bus are flashing, it is not just a suggestion but a legal requirement for drivers in both directions to come to a complete stop at least 20 metres away from the bus. This is crucial, even on roads with multiple lanes. The law is designed to protect the most vulnerable road users—our children.
The penalties for failing to stop for a school bus are severe. Drivers caught illegally passing a stopped school bus can face fines ranging from $490 to $2000, along with six demerit points for a first offence. Repeat offenders can expect fines to escalate to between $1000 and $4000, six demerit points, and even possible jail time of up to six months. These measures underline the seriousness of the offence and the importance of keeping our roads safe for children.
In addition to the legal ramifications, the OPP encourages parents and guardians to take an active role in teaching children about safe practices around school buses. Youth should be reminded to wait in a secure location away from the edge of the road until the bus has come to a complete stop and its overhead lights are flashing. It is essential that children look in both directions before approaching or exiting the bus to ensure no vehicles are coming.
This message serves as a stark reminder of the daily responsibilities that come with being a driver in Ontario. As our communities grow and traffic increases, the OPP is calling on everyone to do their part in ensuring the safety of our children. Each school year brings new faces and new challenges, and it is our collective duty to protect our future generations.
The OPP is also urging the public to report any incidents of dangerous driving, particularly those involving school buses. By working together, we can foster a culture of safety and vigilance on our roads, especially in school zones.
As Canadians, we pride ourselves on being a nation that looks out for one another. Let’s ensure that our roads remain a safe space for our children, who are our most precious resource. Remember, when you see a school bus with its lights flashing, stop means stop. Let’s keep our kids safe.
