OPP Reminds Drivers to Stop for School Buses After Dangerous Incident in Tehkummah Township
In a crucial reminder to motorists, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) from the Manitoulin Detachment have issued a strong warning regarding the imperative to stop when encountering a school bus with flashing red lights. This announcement comes in the wake of a concerning event that took place on October 7, 2025, when a white Chrysler sedan was reported to have illegally passed a stopped school bus on Highway 6 in Tehkummah Township.
The OPP highlighted that this incident is a stark reminder of the responsibilities drivers have when it comes to ensuring the safety of schoolchildren. According to the law, when a school bus’s red lights are flashing, drivers in both directions must come to a complete stop at least 20 metres away from the vehicle, regardless of the number of lanes on the road. This regulation is not merely a suggestion, but a crucial aspect of road safety designed to protect some of our most vulnerable citizens — children.
The consequences of ignoring this law can be severe. Drivers caught illegally passing a school bus face hefty fines ranging from $490 to $2,000 for a first offence, alongside six demerit points. For repeat offenders, the penalties escalate significantly, with fines increasing to between $1,000 and $4,000, plus the potential for jail time up to six months and the same six demerit points.
“Our children rely on us to keep them safe, not just when they are in school, but also as they travel to and from their educational institutions,” said a spokesperson for the OPP. This sentiment resonates deeply across Canada, where the safety of children is a shared priority among families and communities alike. The OPP’s message serves as a timely reminder, particularly as the school year progresses and children are regularly seen boarding and disembarking from buses.
In addition to urging drivers to stop for school buses, the OPP is also educating children on how to safely navigate their bus experience. Young passengers are advised to wait in a secure location, away from the road, until the bus has come to a complete stop, and to ensure that the overhead lights are flashing or the stop arm is activated before approaching or exiting the bus.
The OPP encourages all community members to report any incidents of illegal passing of school buses. This collaboration between law enforcement and the community is vital in reinforcing safe driving practices and ensuring that our children can travel to school without fear.
As Canadians, we have a collective responsibility to uphold the safety of our communities, especially when it comes to the wellbeing of our children. With the OPP’s reminder fresh in our minds, let us all commit to making our roads safer for everyone, particularly for the youngest among us. It is through vigilance and adherence to the law that we can protect our future generations.
