Novar Resident Charged with Impaired Driving Following Emsdale Collision
In a concerning incident that highlights the ongoing issue of impaired driving in Ontario, a Novar resident has been charged following a single-vehicle collision near Emsdale. The incident took place on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at approximately 5:15 p.m., when the Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a vehicle in the ditch on Star Lake Road.
Upon arrival, officers conducted an initial investigation and formed reasonable grounds to suspect that the driver had been consuming alcohol prior to the crash. The OPP promptly arrested the driver, who was later identified as 35-year-old Brock Sarginson from Novar.
After the arrest, Sarginson was taken to the Burk’s Falls OPP detachment, where he was required to provide breath samples as part of the standard procedure for suspected impaired driving cases. However, he declined to comply with this lawful demand, which only added to the charges against him.
As a result of the investigation, Sarginson has been charged with two offenses: operation while impaired - alcohol, and failure or refusal to comply with a demand. In addition to these charges, he has received a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS), and the vehicle involved in the collision has been impounded for a period of seven days.
The implications of impaired driving extend far beyond legal repercussions. Every year, thousands of Canadians are affected by alcohol-related incidents on our roads, leading to injuries and fatalities. The OPP continues to remind the public of the dangers associated with impaired driving, emphasizing the importance of designated drivers, public transportation, or ridesharing services to ensure safety on our roads.
Sarginson has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sundridge on December 18, 2025. As the court date approaches, the community will undoubtedly be watching closely, reflecting on the importance of responsible driving and the need for safety on our highways and byways.
This incident serves as a crucial reminder for all Ontarians: the consequences of impaired driving can be severe, not just for the individual involved but for everyone on the road. As we approach the holiday season, let us all commit to making safer choices to protect ourselves and our fellow citizens.
