Novar Resident Charged with Impaired Driving After Emsdale Collision
In a concerning incident that underscores the ongoing issue of impaired driving, a Novar resident has been charged following a single-vehicle collision near Emsdale, Ontario. This occurrence highlights the importance of road safety, particularly as the colder months approach when driving conditions can become more precarious.
On Tuesday, October 21, 2025, around 5:15 p.m., the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) from the Almaguin Highlands detachment, along with Parry Sound District Emergency Medical Services, responded to reports of a vehicle in a ditch on Star Lake Road. The swift response of emergency services is a reminder of the critical role that police and medical responders play in ensuring the safety of Ontarians.
Upon arrival, officers conducted an investigation and gathered evidence that led them to believe that the driver had consumed alcohol prior to the collision. The driver, identified as 35-year-old Brock Sarginson from Novar, was subsequently arrested. However, in a troubling turn of events, he declined to comply with the lawfully required demand to provide breath samples—an action that is taken very seriously under Canadian law.
As a result of the investigation, Sarginson has been charged with the following offenses:
-
Operation while impaired - alcohol
-
Failure or refusal to comply with demand
Such charges are not merely legal formalities; they serve as a stern reminder of the grave risks associated with impaired driving. The consequences extend beyond legal ramifications, impacting community safety and individual lives.
Following the arrest, Sarginson was released from custody but is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Sundridge on December 18, 2025. In addition to facing these charges, he has received a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS), and his vehicle was impounded for a period of seven days.
This incident serves as a critical reminder to all drivers about the importance of making responsible choices behind the wheel. With the holiday season approaching and celebrations likely to increase, the OPP and local authorities are urging everyone to plan ahead and ensure they have safe transportation options if consuming alcohol.
As Canadians, we take pride in our commitment to road safety and the well-being of our communities. It is essential for all drivers to remember that impaired driving not only affects the individual behind the wheel but also endangers everyone on the road. Let’s continue to work together to keep our roads safe for everyone.
