In an effort to enhance road safety and address the troubling rise in impaired driving incidents, the Quinte West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is launching focused patrols in collaboration with local police services. This initiative, which runs from October 20 to November 2, is designed to deter impaired driving and ensure the safety of all road users in the region.

Inspector Kristy McNaughton of the Quinte West OPP highlighted the seriousness of the situation, noting that the number of impaired driving charges has surged both locally and across Ontario. “The increase in the number of impaired driving charges is staggering. It is proactive patrols such as RIDE programs that are helping get impaired drivers off our area roads,” she stated.

The OPP’s approach utilizes data to identify crime and traffic trends, allowing them to strategically deploy resources where they are most needed. This data-driven strategy enhances their ability to target high-risk areas, thereby increasing the effectiveness of their policing efforts.

As part of this initiative, the motoring public can expect to see an increase in RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) programs, where officers will conduct roadside checks. During these stops, motorists may be required to provide a breath sample on-site, a measure that has been in place since Mandatory Alcohol Screening (MAS) became law in Canada in 2018. This law aligns Canada with international practices aimed at reducing impaired driving incidents.
