Leamington Driver Charged with Impaired Operation and Dangerous Driving After Traffic Stop
On the evening of October 19, 2025, a routine patrol by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Leamington turned into a significant enforcement action when an officer spotted a vehicle operating without proper headlights. This observation, made at approximately 9:40 p.m. on Erie Street South, set off a chain of events that would ultimately lead to multiple charges against the driver.
As the officer activated emergency lights to signal the vehicle to stop, the driver, identified as 40-year-old Cesar Cubias-Gonzalez, failed to comply with the traffic signal, proceeding through an intersection controlled by a stop sign. In a concerning display of recklessness, he nearly collided with another vehicle before finally coming to a halt.
Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer noted several signs of impairment, prompting an immediate arrest. Cubias-Gonzalez was subsequently transported to a local detachment for further testing to determine the level of impairment. The results of this testing confirmed the officer’s suspicions, leading to serious charges under the Criminal Code.
Cubias-Gonzalez now faces charges that include dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, operating while prohibited, and operation while impaired due to alcohol and drugs. Additionally, he is charged with failure or refusal to comply with a demand, which can carry significant penalties under Canadian law.
In a broader scope, the accused is also facing 11 charges under various provincial acts, including the Highway Traffic Act, Liquor Licence Control Act, and Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act. These charges include disobeying a stop sign, driving a motor vehicle with liquor readily available, and operating a vehicle without insurance.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of impaired driving, which continues to be a pressing issue across Ontario and the rest of Canada. According to recent statistics, impaired driving remains a leading cause of road fatalities in the country, prompting ongoing efforts from law enforcement to curb this dangerous behavior.
As we approach the winter months, when driving conditions can become treacherous, the importance of responsible driving cannot be overstated. The OPP urges all drivers to stay vigilant, avoid alcohol and drug consumption before getting behind the wheel, and always ensure their vehicles are in compliance with safety regulations.
In light of this incident, the community of Leamington is reminded of the critical role that law enforcement plays in maintaining road safety and reducing the risks associated with impaired driving. As citizens, it’s essential to support these initiatives and report any suspicious driving behavior to help keep our roads safe for everyone.
Cubias-Gonzalez is scheduled to appear in court to answer the charges, and the OPP will continue to monitor and enforce traffic laws to ensure the safety of all Ontario residents.
