Guelph Driver Charged with Stunt Driving Over Double Speed Limit in Centre Wellington

In a concerning incident that underscores the importance of road safety, a young driver from Guelph has been charged with stunt driving after being clocked at more than double the speed limit in a community safety zone. The incident took place early on October 21, 2025, in Ponsonby, a small community within Centre Wellington Township.

At around midnight, members of the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting proactive patrols on Wellington Road 7 when they observed a vehicle travelling at an alarming speed of over 60 km/h above the posted limit. The area in question is designated as a community safety zone, an indication that the region is particularly sensitive to speeding due to nearby schools and residential areas.

The 20-year-old driver from Guelph faces several charges under the Highway Traffic Act, including:

  • Drive Motor Vehicle - Perform Stunt - Excessive Speed - Community Safety Zone

  • Careless Driving - Community Safety Zone

  • Speeding - Community Safety Zone

Under Ontario law, a conviction for “performing a stunt” while driving carries severe penalties, including a mandatory 14-day vehicle impoundment and a 30-day driver’s licence suspension. This incident has raised eyebrows among locals, many of whom feel that such reckless behaviour puts the safety of the community at risk, particularly in areas frequented by children and families.

The driver is expected to appear in the Provincial Court of Justice in Guelph at a later date, where the legal consequences of this reckless act will be addressed. The OPP is reminding the public of the importance of adhering to speed limits, especially in community safety zones, which are designed to protect vulnerable road users.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against reckless driving in Ontario. With an increase in traffic incidents linked to speeding and stunt driving, local authorities are ramping up their enforcement efforts to ensure the safety of all residents.
