On the evening of October 18, 2025, a two-vehicle collision in Essa Township has led to serious legal repercussions for one driver. Members of the Nottawasaga Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to an automatic crash notification shortly before 10:00 p.m. on County Road 56, an area known for its traffic challenges.

Upon arrival, police found one vehicle in a ditch with moderate front-end damage, while the second vehicle was overturned on the west side of the roadway. The investigation revealed that a northbound vehicle had entered the southbound lane, prompting the other driver to swerve and leave the roadway to avoid a head-on collision. Miraculously, both drivers were assessed by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and reported no injuries, but the situation could have easily turned tragic.

Prior to the collision, the OPP had received multiple complaints regarding one of the vehicles. Witnesses reported erratic driving behaviour, including high speeds, drifting into oncoming lanes, and erratic braking, which raised alarms about the driver’s capability to safely operate the vehicle. Such reckless behaviour is a growing concern across Canadian roads, especially as we approach the festive season when impaired driving incidents tend to spike.

During their investigation, officers established grounds to believe that the driver of the vehicle in question was impaired by alcohol. This led to the arrest of Edwin Shajab, who now faces serious charges related to impaired driving.
