Egbert Man Arrested for Impaired Driving in Essa Township After Erratic Behavior
In a concerning incident that highlights the ongoing battle against impaired driving on Ontario’s roads, an Egbert man was arrested in the early hours of October 19, 2025, after officers from the Nottawasaga Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) observed erratic driving behavior in Essa Township.
Shortly after 2:00 a.m., OPP officers conducting routine patrols on County Road 10 noticed a vehicle driving at a speed of just 70 km/h—10 km/h below the posted limit of 80 km/h. The vehicle was also seen intermittently braking and drifting toward the centre line, raising immediate concerns for the safety of both the driver and other road users.
Recognising the potential danger, the officers initiated a traffic stop. During their interaction with the driver, identified as 43-year-old Justin Wright from Egbert, they observed several signs of impairment. Officers noted his glassy eyes and the strong odour of alcohol on his breath, alongside slow and deliberate speech. Most concerning was his difficulty in locating his driver’s licence, a common indicator of impaired judgment.
Given these signs, the officers had reasonable grounds to believe that Wright was operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol. He was subsequently arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including operation while impaired—both alcohol and drugs, operation while impaired—blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
This incident serves as a reminder of the serious risks associated with impaired driving, especially as we approach the holiday season when festivities often lead to increased alcohol consumption. The OPP have been vocal about their commitment to keeping Ontario’s roads safe, emphasizing that impaired driving can have tragic consequences not only for the driver but for everyone on the road.
In Canada, the penalties for impaired driving can be severe, including substantial fines, license suspensions, and even imprisonment. Moreover, the long-term implications of a conviction can affect employment opportunities, travel, and insurance rates.
As citizens, it is crucial to remain vigilant and responsible when it comes to alcohol consumption and driving. Should you find yourself planning a night out, consider alternative transportation options, such as designated drivers, taxis, or rideshare services.
By working together, we can contribute to safer roads in our communities and prevent the needless tragedies that can arise from impaired driving. The OPP encourages anyone who observes erratic driving to report it immediately, as prompt action can save lives.
