The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have reported significant enforcement results from their “Operation Impact” traffic campaign, which ran from October 10 to October 13, 2025. This initiative, aimed at reducing preventable motor vehicle fatalities and injuries, particularly during the busy Thanksgiving long weekend, saw officers from the West Region’s 13 detachments conduct over 2,000 traffic stops, resulting in a total of 1,832 charges.

“Operation Impact” is a critical effort by the OPP, targeting the primary causes of road fatalities in Canada: impaired driving, aggressive driving, failure to wear seatbelts, distracted driving, and driver fatigue. The campaign aims not only to enforce existing traffic laws but also to educate the public about safe driving practices.

The breakdown of charges during the campaign highlights some concerning trends. Speeding continues to be a major issue, with 919 charges laid for that infraction, showing a slight decrease from the previous year’s 939. However, there was a notable increase in charges for failure to wear a seatbelt, which jumped to 75 from 57 in 2024. Distracted driving offenses surged significantly, with 47 charges compared to just 6 the year prior. Impaired driving charges decreased slightly, with 36 charges reported this year down from 54.

Additionally, officers charged 41 individuals with stunt driving, an increase from 29 last year. This rise underscores the ongoing struggle the OPP faces in combating reckless driving behaviours on Ontario’s roads.

The high volume of traffic stops and subsequent charges is a clear indication of the OPP’s commitment to ensuring road safety, particularly during high-traffic periods like Thanksgiving. The results of “Operation Impact” serve as a reminder to all drivers in southwestern Ontario to remain vigilant and prioritize safety behind the wheel.
