Southwest Middlesex Driver Charged with Multiple Offences After Attempting to Evade OPP RIDE Program
On October 12, 2025, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were actively engaged in a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) program on Hagerty Road in the Municipality of Southwest Middlesex when an incident unfolded that led to multiple charges against a local driver.
At approximately 10:00 p.m., officers observed a vehicle that appeared to be attempting to evade the RIDE checkpoint. Promptly, police initiated a traffic stop, leading to the arrest of 20-year-old Dustin McNaughton of Southwest Middlesex.
McNaughton now faces serious charges under both the Criminal Code and the Highway Traffic Act. The charges include operation while impaired due to alcohol consumption, failure to comply with a demand made by officers, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. Additionally, he has been charged for not properly wearing a seatbelt, driving without functioning headlights, and lacking proper rear lights on his vehicle. He is also charged with failing to notify the authorities about a change of address related to his driver’s licence.
The OPP’s RIDE program is a crucial initiative aimed at reducing impaired driving incidents across Ontario. By setting up checkpoints and conducting random vehicle stops, police actively deter drivers from getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. This particular incident not only underscores the effectiveness of the RIDE program but also serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of impaired driving.
McNaughton has since been released from police custody, as per standard procedure following such arrests. As the case progresses, it will undoubtedly be a point of interest for both law enforcement and the community, highlighting the ongoing battle against impaired driving.
Impaired driving remains a significant concern in Ontario, with ongoing campaigns aimed at raising awareness and enforcing the law. The OPP encourages all drivers to be responsible and make safe choices, especially during festive seasons or events that may involve alcohol consumption.
As this case unfolds, it reinforces the importance of community vigilance and the role of law enforcement in keeping roads safe for everyone.
