Kapuskasing Man Charged After Fleeing Police on ATV
On October 3, 2025, a Kapuskasing man found himself in hot water after allegedly fleeing from police while operating an all-terrain vehicle (ATV). Derek Dufresne, 20, has been charged with multiple offences following a reckless pursuit that began in a parking lot on Government Road.
The incident unfolded around 9:00 p.m. when the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call about a possible impaired driver in the area. Officers quickly arrived on the scene, spotting Dufresne on his ATV. However, instead of complying with a traffic stop, he reportedly accelerated away from the officers, spinning tires as he made his escape.
In a reckless move, Dufresne struck a construction pylon and breached fencing before entering Government Road, where he continued to speed away from the police. Thankfully, officers were able to apprehend him shortly thereafter.
While no evidence of impaired driving was found, Dufresne’s actions led to serious consequences. He has been charged with flight from a peace officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, performing stunts while driving, and wilfully interfering with a highway.
This incident highlights the ongoing issue of reckless driving in Ontario, particularly among young drivers. The police are urging citizens to report any suspicious or dangerous driving behaviour to help ensure community safety.
Dufresne’s court date has not yet been announced, but he now faces a future that may include significant legal repercussions for his actions. The OPP continues to stress the importance of responsible driving, particularly as the region gears up for the winter months, when road conditions can become treacherous.
As the investigation continues, community members are reminded of the importance of adhering to traffic laws and the potential dangers of operating vehicles under dangerous circumstances. The OPP are committed to maintaining public safety on the roads and will pursue those who endanger themselves or others through reckless behaviour.
