Southern Georgian Bay OPP Issue Over 100 Tickets During Thanksgiving Road Safety Campaign

The Southern Georgian Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) took significant action over the Thanksgiving long weekend, launching a targeted road safety initiative under the banner of Operation Impact. This national traffic enforcement effort is aligned with Canada’s Road Safety Strategy, aimed at reducing serious collisions on our roads.

Between October 10 and 13, 2025, officers from the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment were highly active in their efforts, issuing more than 100 tickets and warnings to motorists. The enforcement focused on what are known as the “Big 4” driving behaviours that are major contributors to traffic accidents: speeding, seatbelt violations, distracted driving, and impaired driving.

Throughout the weekend, the OPP conducted RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) spot checks across the region, which proved to be effective. Fortunately, no arrests or suspensions related to alcohol or drug use were reported during this time, indicating a positive response from the community regarding responsible driving.

However, two incidents stood out as particularly concerning. On the evening of October 11, officers clocked a 25-year-old female from Midland driving at an alarming speed of 127 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on Wilson Road. Just a few hours later, at approximately 10:00 p.m., a 25-year-old male from Peterborough was apprehended for exceeding the speed limit by a staggering amount, reaching 173 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Highway 400.

Both drivers faced serious consequences for their reckless actions. They were issued court summonses for multiple offences, their driver’s licences were suspended, and their vehicles were impounded under Ontario’s Stunt Driving Laws.

The OPP has reiterated its commitment to ensuring public safety on the roads, urging all motorists to share the road responsibly. With the Thanksgiving weekend marking a time of increased travel, the importance of safe driving cannot be overstated. The proactive measures taken by the Southern Georgian Bay OPP serve as a reminder that road safety is a shared responsibility, and that reckless driving will not be tolerated.

As Canadians continue to enjoy their long weekends, the OPP’s rigorous enforcement and the community’s receptiveness to safe driving practices will hopefully lead to safer roads for everyone.
