A tragic incident in Deer Lake First Nation has resulted in the arrest of a local woman in connection with a fatal residential fire that claimed three lives. Michelle Meekis, 28, was taken into custody on October 6, 2025, and charged with three counts of causing death by criminal negligence and two counts of causing bodily harm by criminal negligence.

The fire broke out on October 29, 2023, prompting a response from the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service. Upon arrival, first responders discovered the bodies of three individuals and transported two others to hospital with injuries. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with the Office of the Fire Marshal were soon called to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire.

Investigators have found that the fire ignited after fireworks were reportedly set off inside the residence, leading to the tragic outcome. The OPP’s Major Case Investigation Team, under the direction of its Criminal Investigation Branch, has been diligently examining the events that transpired that night.

Following her arrest, Meekis has been released from custody and is expected to appear in court on November 25, 2025, at the Ontario Court of Justice in Deer Lake.
