Major Drug Bust in Thunder Bay: Over 1 kg of Cocaine Seized, Hamilton Man Arrested
In a recent operation, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have made a significant breakthrough in combating drug trafficking in Thunder Bay. On September 18, 2025, police executed search warrants at a hotel, a business, and a vehicle, leading to the seizure of more than 1 kg of cocaine, crack cocaine, and a prohibited weapon.
The investigation, which began in September 2025, was spearheaded by the OPP-led Provincial Guns and Gangs Enforcement Team (PGNG). The team was aided by various local units, including the Thunder Bay Police Service’s Emergency Tactical Unit, the North West Region Intelligence Unit, and the Community Street Crime Unit.
During the operation, authorities seized approximately 1.2 kg of suspected cocaine, 20 g of suspected crack cocaine, and $84,000 in Canadian currency. In addition to the drugs and cash, investigators also confiscated a conducted energy weapon, commonly known as a stun gun, along with several cell phones, which are often used for coordinating drug sales.
The estimated street value of the seized drugs is more than $120,000, a substantial amount that could have significantly impacted the local drug market.
As a result of this investigation, 42-year-old Andre Callaghan from Hamilton has been charged with several serious offences, including possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking under the Criminal Code and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
This incident underscores the ongoing issue of drug trafficking in Ontario, particularly in Northern communities like Thunder Bay. The OPP and local police services are continuously working to address these challenges through intelligence-led operations and community engagement.
Residents and community leaders have expressed concern over the rising tide of drug-related activities, which often lead to increased crime and safety issues. The successful outcome of this investigation sends a strong message that law enforcement is committed to tackling drug-related crime head-on.
As this case unfolds, the OPP encourages anyone with information about drug trafficking in their communities to come forward. The collaboration between various police units during this operation exemplifies the importance of teamwork in combating organized crime and keeping communities safe.
This major drug bust serves as a reminder of the persistent challenges posed by drug trafficking, but also highlights the effectiveness of law enforcement efforts in tackling these issues.
