Distraction Theft at Otonabee-South Monaghan Farmer's Market Under Investigation

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating a distraction theft that occurred at a farmer’s market in Otonabee-South Monaghan Township, Ontario, raising concerns about safety in local community spaces.

On Thursday, September 25, 2025, a report was made to the OPP regarding a break and enter incident at a farm located on County Road 2. The farm, known for its small farmer’s market selling local produce, became the scene of an unusual crime scenario.

According to the complainant, three males arrived in a dark coloured hatchback at approximately 4:45 PM. Described as being between five foot four inches and six feet tall, all three individuals had beards and appeared to be of Middle Eastern descent. The vehicle was noted to have no front licence plate, which raised further suspicion.

While one family member was attending to the market, another family member heard persistent banging at their door. Upon answering, they encountered one of the suspects, who claimed they needed assistance at the market. The family member complied and went to the market, only to find everything appeared normal upon arrival.

However, as they attempted to return to the house, they were intercepted by questions from the suspects, who continued to engage them in conversation. At this point, the situation escalated, and it became clear that the suspects were employing distraction techniques to facilitate their theft.

The OPP are urging anyone with information regarding this incident or the identities of the suspects to come forward. Community safety remains a priority, and the police are committed to investigating this case thoroughly.

Distraction thefts are a clever form of crime that can occur anywhere, but this incident at a local market hits close to home for many residents. The OPP’s appeal for information underscores the importance of community vigilance.

As the investigation unfolds, local farmers and market operators are reminded to remain alert and implement safety measures to protect their goods and ensure a secure environment for patrons. The OPP encourages residents to report suspicious activity immediately to help deter potential criminal behaviour in the community.

This incident serves as a reminder that even in peaceful rural settings, vigilance is essential to maintaining safety and security.
