SIU Investigates Gunfire Incident in Temiskaming District

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has activated its mandate in the Temiskaming District following a police-involved shooting that occurred on Sunday, October 5, 2025. This incident arose from a significant police operation initiated two days earlier, when the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to reports of an armed and dangerous individual in the vicinity of Temagami North and Latchford.

On Friday, October 3, OPP officers launched a large-scale search effort after the alert was raised about the suspect. Authorities issued an emergency alert, advising residents to shelter in place as police deployed a variety of resources, including the Tactics and Rescue Unit, Emergency Response Team, Canine Units, and OPP Aviation.

The situation escalated on Sunday when officers located the suspect. During the confrontation, gunfire was exchanged between the police and the individual. The suspect sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was subsequently transported to hospital for treatment. A police canine was also injured during the incident but is expected to recover.

In light of the ongoing investigation by the SIU, the OPP is unable to release further details regarding the event. The SIU’s involvement indicates that there will be a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the incident, ensuring accountability and transparency in the actions taken by law enforcement.

This incident underscores the complexities and dangers faced by police officers while apprehending individuals deemed a threat to public safety. The community of Temiskaming is now left with questions about the incident and the measures in place to maintain safety in the region.

As the investigation progresses, further updates are expected from the SIU, and the OPP will remain restricted in the information they can provide. The public is urged to stay informed through official channels as more details become available.
