Impaired Driving Charge for Wabigoon First Nation Resident After Highway 17 Collision
On the evening of October 3, 2025, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a serious single-vehicle collision on Highway 17 East, just outside Dinorwic in Southworth Township. The incident occurred around 7:30 PM, prompting a swift response from local law enforcement.
Upon arrival, officers found that the driver, identified as 61-year-old Pamela Wetelainen from Wabigoon First Nation, was involved in the crash. Following an investigation, Wetelainen was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle while impaired by drugs.
Impaired driving remains a critical issue across Canada, with the OPP emphasizing the dangers associated with operating a vehicle under the influence of substances. Impairment can severely affect reaction times, judgement, and overall driving abilities, posing significant risks not just to the impaired driver, but also to other motorists and pedestrians.
Pamela Wetelainen has since been released from custody but is required to appear in court at a later date to respond to the charges against her.
The OPP continues to remind all drivers of the importance of road safety and the severe consequences of impaired driving. They encourage anyone who suspects a driver is impaired to contact authorities by dialling 9-1-1.
As the summer months transition into fall, the OPP’s message is clear: “Drive sober. Arrive alive.” This mantra serves as a sober reminder to ensure that all road users take personal responsibility for their actions behind the wheel.
In the ongoing effort to combat impaired driving, the OPP remains vigilant, conducting regular checks and responding to incidents promptly. The community is urged to stay alert and prioritize safety during their travels, reinforcing the importance of making responsible choices on the road.
