OPP Charges Two Operators as Marine Patrols Intensify Ahead of Thanksgiving Weekend in Midland

As the Thanksgiving long weekend draws near, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Marine Unit in Midland is taking proactive measures to ensure safety on local waterways. With the summer season winding down and many seasonal cottages closing, OPP is maintaining a visible presence, albeit at a reduced level.

From September 29 to October 2, 2025, officers completed 24 hours of marine patrol. These efforts focused on checking boats for required safety equipment and monitoring operators for signs of impairment. The patrols resulted in two operators being charged under the Canada Shipping Act, while six individuals received educational interventions about boating safety.

The OPP’s commitment to ensuring safe boating practices is especially pertinent as the weather begins to cool. Officers will continue to enforce lifejacket compliance and are prepared to remove impaired operators from the water, aligning with the Ministry of Transportation’s safety regulations.

During recent patrols, OPP officers had the opportunity to meet with Ontario Lieutenant Governor Edith Dumont and personnel from the Royal Canadian Navy ship HMCS Margaret Brooke, who were visiting the Midland area. This engagement highlights the collaborative efforts between local law enforcement and federal military operations to promote safety and community awareness.

As boaters prepare for the long weekend, the OPP and its water safety partners urge everyone to remain vigilant. The combination of colder weather and increased boating activity can present unique challenges. The message from the OPP is clear: prioritize safety and make responsible choices on the water.

With the Thanksgiving weekend traditionally marking a busy time for recreational boating, the OPP’s ongoing efforts serve as a reminder to all operators about the importance of adhering to safety regulations and remaining sober while navigating the waterways. The initiative showcases the OPP’s dedication to promoting a safe and enjoyable environment for all boaters in the Southern Georgian Bay area.

As we approach the holiday, let’s keep safety at the forefront, ensuring a memorable Thanksgiving for all the right reasons.
