Sudbury Man Charged with Impaired Driving Following Traffic Stop

On October 2, 2025, a routine traffic stop in Sudbury led to serious charges against a local driver. Officers from the Nipissing West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) observed a vehicle driving erratically on Municipal Road 55 around 5:15 PM, prompting them to take action.

Upon stopping the vehicle, police suspected the driver was impaired by alcohol. Subsequent tests at the OPP detachment confirmed their suspicions. The driver, identified as 54-year-old John Porter from Lively, was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol and operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration over 80 mg.

In addition to the criminal charges, Porter received a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension, and his vehicle was impounded for a period of seven days. He has been released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury on November 5, 2025.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the dangers of impaired driving. The OPP urges all citizens to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1. Impaired driving poses a significant risk not only to the driver but to all road users.

As the holiday season approaches, it is crucial for individuals to plan safe transportation options if consuming alcohol. The OPP’s ongoing commitment to enforcing impaired driving laws aims to keep Ontario’s roads safe for everyone.
