Barrie Woman Charged with Impaired Driving After Traffic Complaint Near Thessalon

A traffic complaint on the evening of September 28 led to the arrest of a woman from Barrie for impaired driving. The incident unfolded on Highway 17, east of Thessalon, when police received reports of a vehicle following another car in a concerning manner.

At approximately 9:00 p.m., officers from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to the call. The driver who reported the incident struggled to provide precise location details but maintained communication with the OPP’s Provincial Communications Centre in North Bay. This coordinated effort allowed police to successfully locate and stop the suspect vehicle west of Massey.

Upon approaching the vehicle, officers immediately detected the strong smell of burnt cannabis. The driver, identified as 26-year-old Kasia Haywood from Barrie, exhibited signs of impairment and displayed paranoid behavior during the interaction. Recognizing the potential danger, police arrested Haywood and transported her to the hospital in Espanola for a medical assessment.

After receiving medical clearance, she was taken to the Espanola OPP detachment where further testing was conducted. As a result, Haywood was charged with operation while impaired by drug.

Haywood has since been released and is scheduled to appear in court to face the charges. This incident underscores the ongoing concerns regarding impaired driving and the risks associated with drug use behind the wheel. The OPP continues to remind drivers of the importance of road safety and the legal consequences of impaired driving.

This case highlights the proactive measures taken by the OPP in response to public safety concerns, as well as the significance of community involvement in reporting suspicious or dangerous driving behavior. Authorities encourage citizens to remain vigilant and report any incidents that could jeopardize road safety.
