Smith-Ennismore Community Police Office to Honor Retired OPP Sergeant Gerry Smith

In a heartfelt tribute to a dedicated public servant, the Smith-Ennismore Community Police will officially dedicate their office in memory of retired Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Sergeant Gerry Smith. The ceremony is set to take place on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at 11:30 AM in the front parking area of the Community Police Office located at 826 Ward Street in Bridgenorth, Ontario.

Sergeant Gerry Smith had a commendable career with the OPP, serving from November 1987 until his retirement in November 2017. Tragically, he passed away unexpectedly in April 2024, leaving behind a legacy that resonated deeply within the community he served. Known for his unwavering commitment to community policing, he was a staunch supporter of various initiatives, including the OPP Auxiliary Program and the Cops for Cancer / Pedal for Hope events.

The dedication ceremony will feature remarks from notable figures including Selwyn Township Mayor Sherry Senis and Peterborough County OPP Detachment Commander Chris Galeazza, as well as family and friends of the late Sergeant Smith. This gathering is not only a way to honour his contributions but also a reminder of the essential role that community policing plays in fostering safe and secure environments for residents.

Attendees are encouraged to dress appropriately for the outdoor event, embracing the spirit of community and remembrance. The dedication serves as a poignant reminder of Smith’s dedication to protecting and serving the people of Ontario, and it highlights the strong ties between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

The Smith-Ennismore Community Police, much like other local police detachments, aims to build strong relationships within the community, enhancing public safety through collaboration and engagement. Their commitment to honouring Sergeant Smith is a testament to the values of service, compassion, and dedication that are the hallmarks of Canadian policing.

As the community gathers to pay tribute to a beloved member of their policing family, it also reinforces the importance of remembering those who have devoted their lives to serving others. The dedication ceremony promises to be a moving event that celebrates not only the life of Gerry Smith but also the ongoing commitment to community safety and support that he championed throughout his career.

Residents of Selwyn Township and the surrounding areas are welcomed to join in this commemorative event, reflecting on the contributions of a man who made a significant impact on the lives of many.
